HOW TO MAKE THE PERFECT OREO BALL

Unless you live in some faraway island off the coast of Tahiti (how in the world are you reading this blog? Do you get Internet there?), you have probably heard of Oreo balls.

Now, don't let the simple and highly vague name fool you. These things are something of genius. And if you aren't familiar with them (Gosh, you really need to get out more often), here's an example:

I KNOW, RIGHT?! They look even more delicious in person. And what's even better about these things is they are extremely easy to make. Believe me, I rarely have the patience to make anything extravagant like Flaming Alaskan or whatever. But the first time I made these, the heavens opened up and angels sang a hallelujah chorus with the late and great, Elvis Presley. Pretty sure they're still singing…they are that good.

Okay, I'm going to stop ranting about the delicious morsels and just give you the recipe already.

HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED:

8 ounces of softened cream cheese or whipped cream cheese
18 ounces (1 package) of Oreo cookies
2 cups of semi-sweet or milk chocolate chips (this can be white chocolate too)
1 tablespoon of shortening

DIRECTIONS:
1. Mix cream cheese with an electric mixer until fluffy
2. Add crushed Oreos until they are mixed in well (make sure your crushed Oreos are completely crushed)
3. Chill for two hours in the freezer
4. Roll the Oreo cookie mix into 1 inch balls
5. Melt the chocolate and shortening together
6. Dip the Oreo balls into the melted chocolate using a toothpick
7. Put the finished product on wax paper
8. Put in the fridge to harden

Makes about 3 or 4 dozen Oreo balls

It's that simple. And it's so stinkin fun. Having a bad day? Make some Oreo balls! You get to beat a package of Oreos to death and not feel like a psychopath. It's awesome!

Another great thing about Oreo balls is you can design them anyway you want for any occasion. I've seen them decorated in red and green colored chocolate for Christmas, orange colored chocolate for Halloween, I've seen sprinkles thrown on them for a little kid's birthday party and I've even seen them made into little cats for my crazy aunt Hilda. So many options!
